Cambodia is committed to green, low-carbon, and climate-resilient economic growth. Its Climate Change Strategic Plan 2014-2023 lays out a comprehensive, economy-wide low emission development strategy (LEDS) that addresses climate change adaptation and greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation. National priorities identified in the plan ensure climate resiliency and sustainable development of Cambodia’s vast natural resources, including forests that cover more than half of the country.
Through the EC-LEDS program, Cambodia and the United States are working together to improve management of GHG emissions from all economic sectors and implement sustainable land use practices in the forestry and agricultural sectors.
Accomplishments and Progress
Assessing Mangroves and Forest Carbon. Cambodian forest sector officials and practitioners are learning to apply a rigorous protocol, developed through the EC-LEDS program, for measuring carbon stored in mangroves and forested wetlands. During a regional workshop, U.S. experts worked with Cambodia to assess carbon stocks in forested wetlands and calculate emission factors for mangrove forests. Measuring these stocks helps to document emissions reductions from sustainable forest management and supports Cambodia’s National Forest Inventory. Using this data to improve land management helps reduce poverty in local communities, protects valuable natural resources, promotes clean air and water, and can improve production of important global commodities. – Ongoing
Improving the National Emissions Inventory. The EC-LEDS program teamed with Cambodia’s Climate Change Department to implement a standardized and sustainable GHG inventory system to track and report on GHG emissions. Robust GHG inventory systems are essential to prioritizing and documenting the impacts of GHG mitigation actions over time. An improved inventory will enable Cambodia to accurately report its emissions, which helps show the progress that all countries are making to address climate change. – 2016
National Forest Inventory (NFI) System Defined. The EC-LEDS program and relevant Cambodian ministries completed a draft design for an NFI system that will track GHG emissions from forest resources, land use, and other natural resources. Data from the NFI is used to calculate forest area, forest types, growing stock and biomass of forests, conditions of forests, and some aspects of forest biodiversity. This data helps track and improve forest management, and reduces deforestation and degradation. – 2014
